The project consists of the full reconstruction of the streets. This consists of full removal of existing street surface, subgrade correction, aggregate base, paving, curb and gutter, signage and drive entrance reconstruction. Sidewalks, streetscape elements, and utility work will be completed as needed.

26th Avenue North is located in northwest Minneapolis on 26th Avenue North from Theodore Wirth Parkway to the Mississippi River.

Traffic impact for 2016

March-May 2016: Between Broadway Avenue and Humboldt Avenue North, parking will be restricted at times and traffic lanes may be reduced to one lane in each direction. Overall disruption will be minimal. The intersection of 2nd Street North and 26th Avenue North will be closed in April and May for utility work.

June-November 2016: From West Broadway Avenue to Humboldt Avenue North, access to churches, residences, and businesses will be maintained for a majority of the project duration; however, there will be times that access will not be possible. All other traffic will be detoured onto Lowry Avenue North.

Project updates

August 7, 2019 update: 26th Ave S will close for about a month for upgrades at the railroad crossing starting on Monday, August 12, 2019. See the full road closure notification letter to residents (July 31, 2019)

November 2, 2017 update: 26th Ave N will be open for public use tomorrow (November 3, 2017) between Humboldt Avenue North and dead-end (Mississippi River). Fremont Avenue North, Emerson Avenue North, and Lyndale Avenue North will continue to be controlled by 4-way stop signs until the signal inspection is completed. Contractor construction crews will be continuing traffic-control clean-up as well as working on punch list items that might need partial/localized closure along 26th Avenue North or crossing streets. New tree placement will occur in the Spring of 2018. Thank you everyone for your patience.

May 27, 2016 Update

City Paving crews completed the final lift of asphalt for the East and West ends November 4-5. City Traffic crews followed up and placed the new lane striping as well (November 9).

City crews are planning to finish up the bike trail paving and concrete work on the west end by November 25. Green areas will be hydro seeded this year with new sod placement in the spring.

November 2, 2015 update: The first lift of asphalt was completed on the west end between Theo Wirth Parkway and West Broadway Avenue today. The bike trail has been paved and completed on the east end between North Lyndale Avenue and North 2nd Street (as of October 20).

October 8, 2015 update:

Broadway to Sheridan: City crews began removal of curb and gutter, sidewalk, and asphalt, and will follow by installing new storm sewer and catch basins. Concrete crews will follow to install new sidewalks, curb and gutter, and driveways prior to the final lift of asphalt.

October 6, 2015 update: Center Point Energy completed replacing gas main between Broadway and Sheridan paving way for City crews to begin finalizing the road construction project.

September 17, 2015 update: City paving crews started concrete work east of the I-94 bridge last week installing curb and gutter, sidewalk and driveways between N Washington Ave and N 2nd Street.

Michels Construction (working for CenterPoint Energy) is continuing work at the intersections of N Sheridan Ave and W Broadway installing a new gas main. City crews will resume work west of Broadway after gas main crews complete utility work in that area (tentatively early October).

The 26th Ave N project will eventually be getting new trees. The City Park Board has marked out locations for along the project.

August 20, 2015 update: City paving crews are putting down the first lift of asphalt between Theo Wirth Pkwy and N Sheridan Ave.

August 19, 2015 update: City paving crews started removal work on 26th Ave N between Washington and N 2nd St today.
Through traffic will be maintained on Washington Avenue and N 2nd St.

City crews will maintain local access to businesses on the south side of N 26th Ave during the construction activities.

August 6, 2015 update: City of Minneapolis paving crews have completed pavement removals for the east bookend between Lyndale Avenue North and 3rd Street North. Concrete Crews will be moving to the end of the project to start concrete work on August 6.
Centerpoint Energy will be mobilizing on August 17 to start new gas main work at the intersection of North Sheridan Avenue and 26th Avenue North.

July 15, 2015 Update: City of Minneapolis paving crews are tentatively scheduled to start working around the middle of next week on Phase II of the 26th Avenue North project (Lyndale Avenue North to 2nd Street North).
