Network password security requirements procedure

This procedure defines the complexity requires for passwords.

Governing Policy: Electronic Communications Policy

Type: Enterprise; Check with the Departmental Policy Coordinator for procedures specific to each department.

Procedure

  • Passwords must be at least 16 characters in length
  • Passwords must contain at least three of the following:
    • One uppercase letter
    • One lower case letter
    • At least one number (0-9)
    • At least one special character (non-alphanumeric character
  • New account or reset passwords must be changed upon next log-on.
  • All passwords must be changed every 45 days.
  • Users cannot submit new passwords that are the same as any of the five used previously.
