3rd Ave Bridge/Central Ave SE Protected Bikeway

In 2017, Minneapolis Public Works installed protected bike lanes on the 3rd/Central Avenue bridge from 1st St S to University Ave SE.

Project details

Project background

The bridge and street segment is owned by the MN Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and is identified in the Minneapolis Protected Bikeway Plan as a protected bikeway connection. The City and MnDOT are partnering to implement an interim protected bikeway in 2017 using signing, striping, and flexible delineators.

A protected bikeway over this bridge would extend the 3rd Ave S protected bikeway to the Marcy Holmes and East Bank neighborhoods. The facility would also connect to a future protected bikeway on University Ave SE, creating an uninterrupted bikeway connecting the University of MN (and parts in-between) to downtown Minneapolis.

The protected bikeway can largely be installed by narrowing existing travel lanes. Curbside parking currently exists on the SE side of Central Ave between 2nd St SE and University Ave SE. Eight (8) metered parking spaces would be removed in order to install the protected bikeway.
