Gothic Revival

You can read about the Gothic Revival architectural style and where it was used in Minneapolis.

About

Inspired by medieval cathedrals in France, England and Germany, American architects in the nineteenth century sought to replicate the Gothic design techniques for many churches, public buildings, and grand estates. While the brick and stone construction materials were often times financially out of reach for average home owners, several Minneapolis residences exhibit features of the Gothic Revival style including pinnacles, strong vertical lines, and carved stone ornaments.

Common Characteristics:

  • Strong vertical lines which add to a sense of height
  • Carved stone ornament, often times leaves, vines or gargoyles
  • Tall pointed windows
