Cedar Riverside Mid-Block Crossing Improvements

The City of Minneapolis built curb extensions and crosswalks at two midblock locations along 6th Street South in Cedar Riverside neighborhood.

Project status and description

The project is complete.

The preliminary planning and community engagement phase of the project started in 2017 and construction began in 2018. The pedestrian safety improvements included ADA ramps, curb extensions, pedestrian crossings, and some traffic signs. The project was funded by the City’s Pedestrian Safety Program and supports the City’s multidisciplinary commitment to Vision Zero – a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries on Minneapolis streets.

Project goals & documents

The need for pedestrian safety improvements in Cedar Riverside neighborhood initially came out of 2016 – 2017 community engagement meetings for the Samatar Crossing project. Public Works reviewed the community feedback to propose midblock crossings in two locations along 6th St S.

The goals of the project were to:

Enhance pedestrian safety by building curb extensions and shortening crossing distance.
Improve pedestrian access to and from adjacent activity centers such as worship centers, apartment buildings and public parks.
Improve accessibility for all members of the community by installing ADA compliant pedestrian ramps.
