We enhance public safety, serve justice, and represent the interests of the City of Minneapolis and its residents.

What the City Attorney does

The City Attorney's Office represents the following parties in civil matters:

  • The City of Minneapolis
  • Elected officials and staff
  • City departments
  • Independent boards and commissions

The City Attorney's Office also prosecutes criminal cases involving adults who commit the following types of crimes in the City of Minneapolis:

  • Petty misdemeanors
  • Misdemeanors
  • Gross misdemeanors

What the Hennepin County Attorney does

In contrast to the City Attorney's Office, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office is responsible for:

  • Prosecuting felony level criminal cases
  • All cases involving juvenile (under 18-years-old) offenders
