Historic Profile: The John A. Widstrom Tenement is significant for its Italianate architectural style. Born in Sweden in 1849, Widstrom immigrated to the United States, arriving in Minneapolis in 1873. A miller by trade, Widstrom settled in the heavily Scandinavian Cedar-Riverside community and built his first home at 625-27 19th Avenue South. The family lived in this house until 1887 when they moved to their new home, residing at number 621. The Widstrom family retained ownership of the property for over 50 years. It is not known who designed or built the three-story tenement, but it wonderfully exhibits characteristics of the Italianate style – the broad bracketed cornice, narrow windows with flat-top arches and projecting bays. Its preservation is an important aspect in the continuum of the city’s architectural history.
