Historic Profile: Built in 1929, the Rand Tower helped define the Minneapolis skyline for many years. Standing 26 stories tall, the stepped skyscraper was designed by the nationally recognized firm of Holabird and Root. Their work on the Rand Tower exemplifies the Art Moderne skyscraper style in massing, plan, and architectural detail. Constructed of cut Indiana Bedford limestone with a base of Quincy granite, the structure was built by the Minneapolis firm of C.F. Haglin and Sons, Inc. at a cost exceeding $130,000. The Art Moderne design is carried into the building’s interior. The Terrazzo floors of the lobby are inlaid with star and crescent shaped ornament and a large starburst which marks the intersection of the main lobby and the elevator bank lobby. Other distinctive features of the lobby include a large silver sculpture, a curving staircase, and decorative elevators.
