Historic Profile: The Menage Cottage is believed to be a project of one of Minneapolis’ earliest real estate developers, Louis Menage. The cottage, built in 1878, is an extremely rare example of a small Gothic Revival style frame cottage in Minneapolis. With its asymmetrical massing, steeply pitched, multi-gable roof, and gothic arch windows, the cottage is distinctive among its neighboring structures. Menage played a leading role in real estate and the development of suburban land to the west of Minneapolis in the 1870s and 1880s. Menage also owned property in the downtown district, including the Loan Building, one of Minneapolis’ first major office buildings.
