Historic Profile: The Melrose Flats are significant as an excellent example of the work of one of Minneapolis’ most distinguished architects, Charles S. Segwick. Segwick’s career began in New York City before he established an architectural firm in Minneapolis in 1884. His preference for designs which employed stylistic characteristics from a variety of sources, using strongly chromatic surfaces and profusely ornamented detail, is exemplified in the Melrose Flats. Organization of the primary façade reflects a Chicago Commercial style prototype with a series of large display windows at the street level and layers of smaller windows above. While only in fair condition, the building has remained unaltered and retains its architectural integrity.
