Historic Profile: The combined use of Italianate and Queen Anne stylistic elements in the P.W. Lein Duplex make it an interesting contribution to Minneapolis architecture. Built at a cost of $1,200 in 1888, the double dwelling is thought to have been influenced by architectural pattern books and stock materials. These resources, popular in the late nineteenth century, would have allowed the builder to select decorative components he found most appealing. The result was an eclectic building with an unusual triple gable roof, intricately carved scroll supports, and segmental arch window openings. The P.W. Lein Duplex is an unusually picturesque representative of the combined use of nineteenth century design elements, and is significant for its survival integrity as an architecturally distinctive entity in the community.
