Historic Profile: Constructed in 1915, the Benjamin and Cora Franklin House is significant as a locally unique example of a compact and utilitarian, yet dramatic, Prairie Style house. Situated near the western shore of Lake of the Isles, it is surrounded by a diverse group of Victorian, Craftsman and period revival residences. Evidently based on the design of a similar dwelling by the California firm of Wolfe and Wolfe, the Franklin House illustrates elements of the Prairie School in its rectangular, flat-roofed, horizontal block, wide overhanging eaves, casement windows, and stucco exterior. The similarity of design between the Franklin House and the California model built by Wolfe and Wolfe provides insight into the role of architectural periodicals such as The Western Architect and The Craftsman in the dissemination of ideas from one region to another. In excellent condition, the house illustrates the marriage of the Midwestern Prairie Style and California houses of the period.
