What is the goal of the census?
The goal of the 2020 Census is to conduct a complete count of every person in the United States, one time and in the right place. The data obtained by the census is critical for our communities, as it will shape political representation and the allocation of federal funding.
Completing the census form
By April 1, 2020, all households should receive an invitation to complete the census form. This form will provide three options for completion:
- Online
- Over the phone 844-330-2020
- Mail-in a paper form (sent to people who don't fill it out online or over the phone by April)
For individuals unable to complete the census form either online, over the phone, or through the mail, a door-to-door enumerator will assist you in completing the form in person.
Visit our Trusted Spaces program to learn where you can complete the census in a safe, welcoming, and familiar environment.

The Department of Justice confirmed the 2020 Decennial Census Questionnaire will not include a citizenship question. All individuals residing in Minneapolis, whether they are official citizens or not, should complete the census form.
