Private sewer lateral grant

We help you pay to fix your sewer lateral line.

Grant information

Funding provided by the Metropolitan Council. After grant money runs out, no more funding will be available.

Funding varies by location of property. Click on the Interactive Map for grant amount eligibility.

Funding will be awarded on a lottery-based system. Those not receiving funding will be put on a waitlist.

Application window will be from 8:00 AM on Monday, February 3rd, 2025 until 8:00 AM on Monday, February 24th, 2025. Applications will not be accepted before or after this period.

Those receiving funding will be notified the week of March 3rd, 2025.

All repair work must be completed within 6 months. If the work isn't done, the funds will be allocated to someone on the waitlist.

Eligibility requirements

  • Residential property in the City of Minneapolis
  • Owner occupied
  • For single family, duplex, or triplex homes only. Owner must occupy one of the units in a duplex or triplex.
  • Only one application per property
  • Funding is not for condo and townhome associations that collectively pay for the sewer line repairs
  • Cannot be a City of Minneapolis employee
  • Use a City of Minneapolis Target Market Program contractor. At least three bids required from this vendor list.
  • Upload copies of three bids at time of application (photo or scanned image)
  • Upload proof of residency at time of application (valid MN license or state-issued ID with property of address)
  • The amount not covered by the grant must be paid by the property owner to the contractor.  The property owner may request to have the remaining amount assessed to their property taxes. Please visit the sewer lateral assessment program page for more information about the assessment program.

Allowed uses for funding

  • Sanitary sewer lateral pipe repair and replacement. (Other costs, such as indoor plumbing, tree removal, and landscaping, are not eligible.)
  • Foundation drain disconnections and needed equipment
  • Sewer lateral inspection and cleaning costs if it results in repair of sewer lateral
  • Grant funding is only for future work, not to reimburse homeowners who have had past repairs performed.
  • Funding is not intended to satisfy a home sale contingency.
