Permits overview

We explain construction code requirements.

Building codes

To keep our buildings safe, the City and the State of Minnesota regulate:

  • Construction
  • Maintenance
  • Remodeling

The City of Minneapolis enforces national and international codes adopted by the State of Minnesota.

As of March 31st, 2020, Minnesota has adopted new building codes. The 2020 MN Mechanical and Fuel Gas Code took effect on April 6th, 2020. We explain which codes this effects and what you need to know for pulling permits.

Your building project may require one or more permits before you can begin work.

Permits

You can see a list of permit types and fees in the Title 5 Fee Schedule.

Before beginning a project, contact Minneapolis 311 to see if you need a permit. For projects using a contractor, the contractor is responsible for getting the permit.

Some projects require the following before we can issue a permit:

  • Site plan
