Bicycle safety starts with all of us. Whether you drive a car, ride a bicycle, or do a little of both, safer streets start with all of us.
Data shows that people who bicycle and people who drive are equally responsible for bicycle crashes in Minneapolis. From 2000-2010, bicyclists contributed to 59% of bicycle crashes, while drivers contributed to 64%. Sometimes both parties contributed to a crash, which is why these figures add up to more than 100%.
When you are on your bicycle, you need to ride predictably and follow traffic laws. When you are driving, you need to look for bicyclists, especially when turning. Not doing so leads to crashes and injuries. No matter how you get around, we all need to do our part to make our streets safer.
