Storm drain stenciling

You can help remind neighbors where stormwater flows to

Storm drain stenciling

Stormwater captured by storm drains flows into our lakes, creeks, and the Mississippi River. It can carry pollutants like pet waste, lawn fertilizer and pesticides, oil and grease, and grass clippings. Keeping our drains clean helps keep our water clean and healthy.

Get involved in your community by organizing a group to clean up storm drains in your neighborhood.

We will provide everything you need to paint educational messages and clean up storm drains near you.

Stenciling kits include:

Custom map of storm drains in your neighborhood

Stencils specific to where your area drains to (river, creek, or lake)

Spray paint

Trash bags, broom, dustpan, and trash grabbers

Safety cones, vests, glasses, and gloves

Educational door hangers

Since the program’s start in 2009, over 4,800 volunteers have stenciled almost 11,000 storm rains, distributed over 22,000 informational door hangers, and collected over 1,200 bags of trash, removing over 29 pounds of phosphorus that would have otherwise ended up in our local waterways.
