Loading and limited-time curb zones

We explain the different kinds of curb use zones and how to apply for them.

Loading and limited-time curb zones

These are sections of curb space dedicated to a specific use. We install these zones at the request of the adjacent property owner. The cost of installation includes signs that explain how the space can be used. There are several kinds of zones.

Commercial loading zone

  • For short-term use to load and unload commercial vehicles
  • Vehicles must have state commercial vehicle registration and be marked as a licensed delivery vehicle, or
  • We can issue a commercial vehicle permit for regular passenger vehicles if you can show a business need for the permits
  • Loading and unloading is limited to 30 minutes unless otherwise signed

Apply for this zone if your business or organization often receives or ships items using commercial vehicles in a high demand area.

Passenger loading zone

  • For the timely loading and unloading of passengers
  • Vehicles can stop in this zone for up to 3 minutes, and the driver must stay with the vehicle

Apply for this zone if your business or organization often has high numbers of customers or employees who use transportation services such as taxis or transportation network companies.

Limited-time zone

  • To limit the length of time all vehicles can park
  • To be used in areas without parking meters
  • The maximum length of time is determined when you apply for the zone
  • Common time limits include 15 minutes, 30 minute, or 1 hour

Apply for this zone if there are no parking meters on adjacent streets and street parking turnover will benefit your business or organization.

No parking zone

  • Prohibits general parking for any reason
  • Creates a space that can be used as a commercial or passenger loading zone
  • Passenger vehicles can stop in the zone for up to 3 minutes, and commercial vehicles can use the zone for loading or unloading for up to 30 minutes

Apply for this zone if your business or organization needs enough space to handle visitors and deliveries. These zones are also used to ensure enough space for large vehicles to turn into and out of private driveways.

  • For the operation of licensed valet services
  • Must be monitored by valet operator staff at all times that the zone is in effect
  • Vehicles queued within this zone can be parked for up to 15 minutes, and valet staff must have access to move the vehicles at all times
  • Standard passenger vehicles may also use this type of zone for passenger loading

Apply for this zone if your business or organization wants to provide hospitality valet services.

Fees to install and maintain parking zones

We determine the price to establish a new zone, and the annual fees to keep the zone in place, based on the length of the zone. Additional fees apply for zones that are within metered areas.

Commercial, passenger, limited-time, and no parking zones

  • 60ft or less $700 installation and $250 annual maintenance fee
  • 61ft - 360ft $1,050 installation and $375 annual maintenance fee

Valet parking zones

  • $1,500 per year for a 20ft parking space

Fees in metered areas

Zones in metered parking areas require additional fees based on the amount of time they overlap the adjacent metered parking times. These fees help manage demand for the curb space.

  • 5-20 hours of overlap per week is $1,500 per space
  • 21-40 hours of overlap per week is $2,000 per space
  • 41 or more hours of overlap per week is $2,500 per space
