  • Emergency repairs can be done before you apply for a permit. You must apply within the next working business day.

Construction, replacement and repair

  • Decks, platforms and stoops that:
    • Are freestanding and less than 30 inches high
    • Are not attached to a structure with frost footings
    • Do not serve the main entrance to the dwelling unit
  • Fences no more than seven feet high
  • Gutter systems
  • Playhouses
  • Sidewalks and walkways on private property and not on an accessible route
  • Swings and other play equipment
  • Swimming pools that are prefabricated and meet the size guidelines
  • Tool and storage sheds that are one-story and less that 200 square feet
  • Window awnings that project no more than 54 inches

  • Clothes drying, cooking, cooling, heating or ventilation appliances and equipment
  • Evaporative coolers
  • Fuel cell appliances that are not:
    • Connected to a fixed piping system
    • Interconnected to a power grid
  • Self-contained refrigeration systems

Updates and replacement of existing equipment

These types of projects may not require a permit. Make sure your project meets the conditions.

  • Replacement of any minor part that does not alter approval of equipment
  • Steam, hot or chilled water piping within any regulated heating or cooling equipment
  • Capping an open gas line

Plumbing work

Reconnect, repair, install and replace some appliances and equipment

You can do the following type of work in one- and two-family dwellings if:

  • Conditions are sanitary and not hazardous.
  • You do not alter or replace the existing water supply line or plumbing piping system.
  • Your project meets the all the conditions.

Types of work

  • Reconnect an existing water supply line to a similar replacement appliance
  • Replace
    • Clean-out plugs
    • Dishwashers and garbage disposals
    • Internal working parts of existing water closets, faucets or valves
    • Sink faucets and water closets
  • Repair
    • Broken drain, waste and vent pipes
    • Leaking fixtures and water pipes
    • Appliances, without altering the appliance
  • Install a new garbage disposal
