Certificate of Occupancy

A Certificate of Occupancy (CoO) is required before a new building can be occupied. A new CoO is required whenever there is a change in the building's use or occupancy classification.

Overview

A Certificate of Occupancy (CoO) gives permission for a building or structure to be used or occupied by the public. It is valid:

  • For the life of the building, or
  • Until there is a change in building use or occupancy.

Inspection requirements

The building or structure must pass:

  • All on-site construction inspections like mechanical and plumbing
  • A final CoO inspection

How it works

  • You must request the final CoO inspection when the building is ready to be occupied.
  • The building official:
    • Conducts the inspection.

    • Confirms there are no violations of the code or other laws enforced by the Department of Building Safety.

    • Approves the final CoO inspection.
