If you are planning a do-it-yourself project:
- Find out if you need a permit. Projects of any size may require that you get a permit before you begin work. In Minneapolis, homeowners (the owner / occupant of a single family home) can get permits for work they intend to do themselves. For information about permits, see Permits Overview.
-
Get more information about various types of home projects. See Minneapolis Development Review for Homeowners
-
Learn about fire safety and requirements for residences. See Minnesota Department of Public Safety fire codes information
-
Read up on remodeling or construction. Visit the State of Minnesota Commerce Department (select All Publications & Tips)
If you hire someone to do the work and that work requires a permit:
- The person must be licensed to do that particular type of work.
- Rental property, duplexes and non-owner occupied single family houses and townhouses need licensed contractors for permit work.
