These documents provide the foundation for City of Minneapolis historic district and landmark designation studies.

Places identified in these documents are not automatically protected from alterations that may affect their historic appearance. Further formal research (a designation study) is required to determine if they merit formal protection as historic districts or landmarks. Designation studies require nominations by one of the following:

  • Property owner
  • Mayor
  • City Council
  • Heritage Preservation Commission,
  • Planning Director

Designation studies involve close dialogue with property owners and offer members of the public opportunities to share their preferences with the:

  • Minneapolis City staff
  • Heritage Preservation Commission
  • City Council

We will incorporate this statement into the City’s context statement.
