About the project

The City and the Municipal Building Commission recently renovated City Hall. The third floor underwent major changes.

This included:

  • New office spaces for the City Clerk staff, Mayor's staff, and City Council staff.
  • Upgrades to the Council chambers and meeting rooms.

The renovation revealed historic building features, including a grand staircase.

Goals

Goals of the public art project include:

  • Welcome everyone into City Hall.
  • Reflect the identities, cultures, and histories of Minneapolis and Hennepin County residents.
  • Honor this iconic, historic building, the City, and County, and tell their stories.
  • Showcase Minneapolis and Hennepin County as a world class arts community.
  • Highlight artworks centering on civic issues and democratic values.
  • Provide opportunities for artists at various career stages and ability levels.
  • Be timeless, elegant and meaningful but also look to the future—juxtapose old and new.
  • Engage City and County employees—the public servants who make these places work.
  • Ensure artworks are easy to maintain and secure.
