What to know

You need a permit if you want to install, change or extend the fire safety systems below. You must get a permit before starting your work.

  • Fire sprinklers
  • Standpipe
  • Fire pumps
  • Private fire hydrant systems
  • Fire detection and alarm systems
  • Smoke control systems control panels

You can inspect, test or do preventative maintenance without a permit.

Permit process

Step 1

Make sure you have the right license

Type of work Required license
Fire alarm and communications systems Electrician or low voltage contractor - State of Minnesota
Systems designers for fire alarm and communications systems NICET Level 3 Certified, or factory trained and certified in fire alarm system designs
Fire suppression system/sprinkler systems Fire protection contractor - State of Minnesota
Work on smoke control systems that involves sheet metal, refrigeration and heating Licensed contractor - City of Minneapolis
Step 3

Submit the forms via email

Email the following forms to Fire Inspections

  • Permit application
  • If needed, project information forms

Hold off on submitting your project plans. If needed, we'll ask you to submit them later through ProjectDox.

Step 4

Pay the fee

Pay the fee when you submit your application. The fee is based on:

  • The contract cost—the total price the property owner paid
  • The plan review fee
  • State surcharge

Step 5

If needed, submit your plans online

Plan requirements

You'll need to submit more information if you're:

  • Doing a new installation
  • Adding, moving, or changing the size of piping or other parts and devices

Regardless of type of project, all designs must follow:

  • State Fire Code
  • NFPA standards
  • Minneapolis Fire Inspections requirements

Step 6

Application and plan review

We'll review your application and plan. In most cases, you can expect to hear from us in 20 days after we receive it.

Step 7

Schedule an inspection

You need a final inspection to close the permit.
