Overview

The City chose Trellis to lead Phase 1 of the project after a competitive proposal process. Trellis is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit developer.

Phase 1 development will be on the southeast corner of the old Kmart site at Nicollet and Lake. It will include: 

• Affordable housing co-developed by Trellis and 1st Class Residential Properties.
• Space for businesses with technical support from Neighborhood Development Center.
• Spaces for nonprofits
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities
  • Build Wealth Minnesota
• Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board program space.

Developer selection

City staff spent years connecting with community to learn about what they want to see at this site. They presented their recommendation to City Council on April 7. 

The City picked Trellis in part because their proposal aligns with community priorities. 

It will take about three to five years for the Phase 1 project to be funded and constructed.
