Sawdust | Sawdust from untreated lumber is compostable and should be double bagged (paper bag or certified compostable plastic bag) and placed in your organics recycling cart for collection. Residents may also bring compostable items to organics drop-off sites located around the City. If you are unable to participate in the organics recycling program, double bag and place inside the garbage cart. Make sure the ashes have cooled before double bagging. Shoes | Many textile recyclers will accept unwanted tennis shoes for recycling. Check with a local textile recycler to see if they'll accept tennis shoes. Some examples of textile recyclers include: Arc's Value Village, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and US'Again. If you cannot find a location to bring your shoes for recycling they may be placed in a bag in your garbage cart. | ![]() | |

Shredded Paper | Try to shred as little paper as possible. Tear you name and account information off of bills or financial statements to avoid shredding. Put the pieces you toe off into an envelope and then into your recycling. Shredded paper is not wanted in recycling as it is too small for the sorting equipment and ends up with the glass. Shredded paper cannot go in organics recycling because toner cartridges may use ink that contains microplastics. You could also reach out to a local credit union or bank to see if they offer shredding services. |

Silverware | Metal silverware: Donate usable metal silverware. If it's not usable, you may bring it to the Transfer Station with a Voucher or one of Hennepin County's Drop-Off Facilities to be recycled as scrap metal, or place it in your garbage cart. Plastic silverware: Plastic silverware is not recyclable and should be placed in your garbage cart. There is BPI certified compostable plastic silverware (commonly off-white in color) that may be placed in an organics recycling cart. Only BPI certified silverware is accepted in organics carts. Smoke Detector | Remove batteries. Alkaline batteries may be placed in the trash. Any other battery type must be brought to a Hennepin County Drop-off Facility for recycling. Syringes | Needles and/or syringes may be collected with garbage if properly prepared. Needles and/or syringes must be placed in a heavy plastic container with a screw on lid, such as a 2-liter pop bottle or laundry detergent bottle. Make sure the lid/cap is screwed on and secured with heavy duty tape. Bag and place the filled container inside the garbage cart. It is preferred if you write "Sharps" on the container. Solid Waste & Recycling will not collect commercial Sharps containers. Inquire about disposal options at a health provider or pharmacy. South Transfer Station will NOT accept this item.
