Historic Profile: This 1915 Prairie School Residence is an outstanding example of a low-cost house that expresses the principles and values of the Prairie School. At the time of construction the Backus House was built for less that $3,000. The first floor pergola, window trellises and casement bands transform the simple cube into a fine art object. Designed by the nationally known firm of Purcell and Elmslie, the Backus House is the first attempt by the firm at a low-cost, full two-story square plan residence.
