Energy benchmarking and transparency

The City requires certain large buildings to benchmark and report energy consumption.

February 2013

Annual benchmarking ordinance

In February 2013, the Minneapolis City Council adopted an ordinance that required certain buildings to annually benchmark energy consumption and report it to the City:

  • Commercial buildings with 50,000 or more square feet
  • City-owned buildings with 25,000 or more square feet

February 2019

Expansion to ordinance

In February 2019, the Minneapolis City Council unanimously passed an expansion to the City's Commercial Building Energy Benchmarking and Transparency ordinance.
