Family Medical Leave Act benefits

Understand the benefits of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and how to use them.

If you’re missing work for your or a family member’s serious health condition, you should explore your options under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). You can also use FMLA leave for the birth of a child, adoption, foster care or a family member’s active military duty. If you’re eligible* for time off under the FMLA, benefits of applying for it include:

  • Job protection.
  • Maintaining your benefits.
  • Returning to the same or equal position after the leave ends.
  • Freedom from discrimination for applying for and using FMLA time.

You may request to use up to 12 weeks off in any 12-month period. FMLA is an unpaid leave, but you can use your vacation, sick and compensatory time to get paid while out on leave.

To apply for FMLA, reach out to The Standard, the City’s leave administrator, at 844-573-0232 or register on its website

*If you register with the Standard, you can go to your online account and see if you’re eligible for FMLA. Otherwise, you can call The Standard to see if you are eligible for FMLA.

FMLA and COVID-19

If you or a family member has COVID-19, you may be eligible for certain leave options. Check the COVID-19 FAQs or contact your HR business partner (generalist) for more information.
