Preparing for Climate Change

Climate Adaptation & Resilience

City skyline with lake in foreground and fog rising off the lake Current levels of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere are resulting in warmer weather and shifts in precipitation patterns. Under current emissions and climate change scenarios, by the end of the century Minneapolis will see higher average temperatures with significantly hotter summers, increases in heavy downpours, especially in the fall and spring, and extended periods of drought in the summer. These changes will likely increase public health risks, threaten the City’s natural resources and ecosystems, and strain existing infrastructure.

The City has been engaging in climate adaptation planning, including the Minneapolis Climate Vulnerability Assessment; 2013 Climate Adaptation and Vulnerability workshops; preparing for Extreme Heat events; and reducing flooding risk for properties through the Flood Mitigation Program and partnering with the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District on a stormwater adaptation study.

In May 2016, Minneapolis was selected by the Rockefeller foundation to join the 100 Resilient Cities network. The selection means Minneapolis will gain access to tools, funding, technical expertise and other resources to build resilience for the challenges of the 21st century.
