Modeling Results: 80% Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction by 2050

The City of Minneapolis passed an 80% by 2050 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal in early 2014. The State of Minnesota and Hennepin County have adopted similar goals. As a result, from 2015 to 2016, the Minneapolis Sustainability Office used Siemen's free open source City Performance Tool (CyPT) to study a series of more than 70 technologies for the building, transport and energy sector at different time periods and implementation rates. On April 18th, 2016, the modeling results were received and filed by the Health, Environment & Community Engagement Committee.

At a very high level, the City Performance Tool models strategies for achieving 80% greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals by 2050 from buildings and transport, as well as air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). It also projects new local job creation from installing, operating and maintaining city solutions. The modeling results are meant to be a starting point to more fully understand the changes that could take place to achieve the City’s reduction targets.
