Whittier International Elementary School
In 2021, the City of Minneapolis, in partnership with Minneapolis Public Schools, plans to implement pedestrian safety improvements around Whittier International Elementary School as part of the Safe Routes to School program.
The City of Minneapolis partnered with Minneapolis Public Schools to create a safe routes to school plan for Whittier International Elementary School in 2018. The City then used the plan to apply for a grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to help fund improvements at three intersections near the school:
- Grand Avenue S & 26th Street W
- Blaisdell Avenue S & 27th Street W
- Pleasant Avenue S and 28th Street W
City Staff are collecting data and engaging with Whittier staff, students and the surrounding community to identify potential treatments. Upon completion, the proposed project will improve bicycle and pedestrian safety near Whittier International Elementary School. Pedestrian improvements for this project may include signal upgrades, ADA-compliant curb ramps, curb extensions, pedestrian refuge medians, signage, traffic control devices, and enhanced pavement markings.
