Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Communities
Minneapolis has topped many lists as being one of the friendliest cities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) communities. Some surveys have ranked Minneapolis as having the fourth-highest gay population, 12 percent of all residents, of major cities. However, the census does not track sexual identity or orientation for individual’s and has only recently begun tracking legally married same-sex couples. Historically, Minneapolis has created and supported policies that promote equity for LGBTQ communities. In the early 70's, Minneapolis was the third city in the country to pass legislation prohibiting housing or employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. The metro area also offers an infrastructure to support GLBT quality of life including many Fortune 500 companies with gay-friendly policies as well as several nonprofits focused on all quality of life domains such as housing, health and wellness and overall advocacy.
