Zoning Approval
Zoning is the first stop for anyone who wants to know if the proposed use of land is allowed. For residential properties, zoning approval is required for projects such as building a deck, an addition, a porch, a fence, or a garage.
To check zoning requirements for your property and whether you need a zoning variance (permission to use the property in spite of zoning requirements), call (612) 673-3000 or go to the Contact Information page for the Zoning Administration. A zoning variance requires action by the Board of Adjustment.
The City's zoning code is contained in Title 20 of the Minneapolis Code of Ordinances. It consists of zoning regulations and a zoning map. The zoning regulations govern the administration of the ordinance and specify the uses allowed and development standards for each zoning district. Flood plain information also is handled through zoning. For more information, go to the Zoning Administration website.
