Sick Leave

Most full-time City employees earn (accrue) one day of sick leave for each calendar month worked. Sick leave may be used for the employee’s own illness, injury or medical appointments. Sick leave may also be used to care for members of an employee’s immediate family. Sick leave balances can be carried over from year to year. Employees who accumulate 60 days of sick leave may have the option to continue to earn sick leave or to receive partial cash payment for any sick leave accumulated in the preceding year above the 60-day minimum.

Temporary employees are not eligible for paid time off benefits such as vacation or holiday pay. However, a temporary employee may be eligible for sick leave per the Minneapolis Safe and Sick Time Ordinance.  Eligible employees may accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Employees may use accrued sick and safe time after their initial 90 days of employment.
