Native American Context Statement & Reconnaissance-Level Survey Supplement

The City of Minneapolis is proud to have received a National Park Service grant to develop a history of Native Americans in our community, and to identify historically significant sites associated with this aspect of our shared heritage.

Thanks to all those who attended our input meetings and provided great insights into the people, places, and events essential to understanding this history.

The context statement and survey supplement are now available here:

These documents provide the foundation for City of Minneapolis historic district and landmark designation studies. Places identified in these documents are not automatically protected from alterations that may affect their historic appearance. Further formal research ( a designation study) is required to determine if they merit formal protection as historic districts or landmarks. To be initiated, designation studies require nominations by the property owner, Mayor, City Council, Heritage Preservation Commission, or Planning Director. Once initiated, designation studies involve close dialogue with property owners and offer members of the public opportunities to share their preferences with the Minneapolis City staff, Heritage Preservation Commission, and City Council.

In time, this project website will be taken down and the context statement will be migrated to the City’s context statement webpage.

Please contact project staff if you have questions:
