Minneapolis Health Department GIS toolkit
The Minneapolis Health Department conducts geospatial analysis of health and population data. These are tools that the Health Department makes publically available to help researchers, community groups, and students to work with Minneapolis geospatial data.
This file creates a spatial definition for Minneapolis neighborhoods using US Census geographies including Census block, Census block group, Census tract, and ZCTA (almost identical to zip codes). This tool can be used to do spatial joins or joins from a table in GIS. This is helpful when working with national level data that may be presented using zip codes (use ZCTA) or Census tracts, or even Census blocks. The neighborhood definition file allows data presented by larger jurisdictions to be organized to communicate information about Minneapolis or Minneapolis neighborhoods.
Hierarchy of Census Geography in Minneapolis
This Minneapolis Health Department document is a reference guide to help people interested in Minneapolis geographies to have the most frequently requested specific Census codes associated with the Minneapolis geographies.
The Census has published a Standard Hierarchy of Census Geographic Entities at http://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/reference/geodiagram.pdf that is a helpful reference for a more complete picture of Census geography.
