Major Bridge Repair & Rehabilitation Program
This program encompasses rehabilitation and major repairs of existing city bridges to extend the operational life of the bridge structures. Candidates are chosen based on public safety and cost effectiveness of the improvements being made. This program will rehabilitate and make major repairs to bridge decks, railings sidewalks, abutments, piers, approaches, and other various components associated with bridges. These major repair and rehabilitation expenses are relatively small and significantly extend the operational life of the much larger bridge asset.
Major bridge repair and rehabilitation is an ongoing program.

11th Ave S Bridge
The 11th Ave S bridge over 3rd and 4th St in downtown Minneapolis will be closed for repair in 2019 and 2020.
The bridge is located on 11th Ave S over 3rd and 4th St S, in the Downtown East neighborhood. The 2019 work will consist of replacing the bearings on the bridge and making repairs to the center pier cap. The 2020 work will consist of painting the beams of the bridge.
Painting of the bridge beams is scheduled to begin in late summer/early fall of 2020.
11th Ave S will be closed to through vehicle traffic for the duration of the project, and a detour will be posted. It is anticipated that pedestrian and vehicle access will be maintained. However, there will be relatively short periods of time when the bridge will need to be closed to both pedestrians and vehicles. This will happen when the bridge is being raised and lowered. There may be additional periods if safety issues arise.
Recommended Detour Routes
3rd and 4th St S will also be detoured at times during the project. This will happen when the bridge is being raised and lowered and when workers are actively working on the center pier cap and on the underside of the bridge.
During the weekend of the Twin Cities marathon, the detour routes will be altered to accommodate marathon activities.
The 11th Ave S bridge was constructed in 1969. The 2019 work will replace the bearings on the bridge, which are corroded. This improvement will allow the bridge to move properly with changes in temperature. The work will also make repairs to the center pier cap. There are numerous utilities that are located on this bridge that will require being supported during these work activities. The 2020 work will paint the beams supporting the bridge deck.
