1st St N Tunnel Repair over Basset Creek
In 2020 the city of Minneapolis will rehabilitate the 1st St N Tunnel over Bassett Creek. This rehabilitation project will extend the service life of the existing tunnel. The biggest construction constraint for this project will be time of construction due to the water levels rising and falling with the Mississippi River. Completing the work when the water is the shallowest will accelerate construction and reduce the price.
Access to the site is restricted to a manhole at 2nd St N and 8th Ave N and the outlet to the Mississippi River. To deliver materials and workers through the manhole a crane is required. Thus closure of the parking lane and the sidewalk on the that side of the road will be required to complete the work.
The Project will concentrate on the bridge over 1st St N between 8th Ave N and 4th Ave N in the tunnel. The above tunnel work will only be for access and delivery at a manhole located on 2nd St N and 8th Ave N.
The bridge is part of a continuous tunnel system over Bassett Creek.
Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 12, 2020.
Anticipated completion of project
Due to the nature of the work mostly taking place beneath the ground in the tunnel there will only be a major traffic impact is not anticipated. Access to the project is through a manhole on 2nd St N near 8th Ave N and requires a crane to lower materials and laborers to the tunnel. To provide that set up the parking lane and sidewalk on 2nd St N would need temporary closures throughout the life of the project.
