Oak Street Protected Bikeway Project
In 2019, the Oak St SE and Delaware St SE intersection will be upgraded to include a floating transit island (i.e. a separate space for transit riders to enter and exit the bus adjacent to the protected bikeway). The project will also include new pedestrian ramps at all four corners of the intersection, new crosswalk markings, and an upgraded signal system. Lastly, the project will replace the large majority of delineators that demarcate the bikeway with a raised concrete median to formalize the separation between the two-way bicycle lane and the existing parking. This will be an extension of the raised median protected bicycle lane that exists between Essex St SE and West River Parkway.

Construction Detours
While the work is occurring, there will be traffic detours for both cyclists and vehicles. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
See the Oak & Delaware Traffic Detour Routes map.
Project History
A two way delineator protected bikeway was installed on Oak St. SE in 2015. Currently, SouthWest Transit, Plymouth Metrolink, and University of Minnesota transit all serve a southbound far side bus stop along the bikeway at the corner of Oak St. SE and Delaware St. SE. The project seeks to improve the 2015 design of the bus stop.
Project Goals
- Develop a preferred layout that incorporates an ADA-compliant bus stop using best practices in pedestrian, protected bikeway, and transit operations design.
- Document best practice recommendations and lessons learned from peer cities, so they can be referenced when designing future bus stops integrated with protected bikeways.
