Project Overview
In 2017, the Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to fill a gap in the bicycle network between William Berry Parkway and Sheridan Avenue South. This segment of Richfield Road/39th Street West is identified in the Minneapolis Bicycle Master Plan. The project would connect to existing bikeways on William Berry Parkway, Lake Calhoun Parkway, Richfield Road, and Sheridan Avenue South.
Proposed Street Design
To provide a comfortable space for people riding bicycles and reduce conflicts between users of the street, dedicated bicycle lanes are the recommended bikeway design on Richfield Road/39th Street West. To install bicycle lanes, parking removal is required on one side of the street. Public Works has conducted a parking study and determined that on-street parking utilization is low and there are off-street parking options for most adjacent properties.
In addition to providing a dedicated space for people riding bicycles, the proposed configuration includes narrower travel lanes and improved striping, which encourages slower speeds and creates a more organized street for all users.
