Animal Adoptions

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control (MACC) is an open admissions full-service shelter for the City of Minneapolis. By law, we keep all stray dogs and cats at least five (5) days to allow their owners to search and reclaim them. However, if the original owner is not found, animals can be made available for adoption to new homes or transferred to a partner rescue group.

Please note that there is a link for animals available for adoption and a separate link for animals available for rescue transfer ("Transfer Only").

The animals under "Adopt" are available to the public for general adoption.

The animals under "Transfer Only" are available only to our approved partner rescue organizations - this is typically due to them needing additional medical or behavioral assistance better suited to being dealt with in a foster home. They are still great animals! They just need a little more love prior to being adopted out.

Adoption Application

To make it easier for you, feel free to complete your adoption application (pdf) at home prior to arriving at the animal shelter.

Adoption Procedures

All adoptions are being done by appointment only, please call 311 or 612-673-6222 to request an appointment.

In order to adopt from MACC the adopter must be 18 years of age with a valid form of ID. Minneapolis residents must have proof of their current address, and all currently owned animals (cats, dogs, or ferrets) must be licensed and provide proof of a current rabies vaccine.

To ensure ample time to process paperwork and answer questions, we stop accepting adoption applications a half hour prior to closing.

MACC reserves the right to deny an adoption.

Adoption Returns

Adopters may return the animal within a period of fourteen (14) calendar days from the date of adoption and receive a full refund of the adoption fee.

If an adopter returns an animal they shall wait seven (7) business days before adopting from MACC again.
